Case Study - Royal North Shore Hospital

Requirements

The Royal North Shore Hospital comprises of more than 50 buildings scattered over a 12 hectare site which The Department of Health are redeveloping. The RNSH redevelopment will be the biggest health capital project ever undertaken in NSW, and represents a significat investment in the future health and well-being of the NSW community.  The redeveloped Hospital will provide new acute care, education, teaching and research facilities for RNSH at a cost of approximately $702 million.  To facilitate this redevelopment, and provide key management information about the assets  should keep and which assets should be replaced, the RNSH determined it needed to undertake a significant physical audit of its 70 buildings and tag each identified asset. The RNSH also determined that it would require a robust asset management software solution that could be used to manage the assets on an on-going basis.

Solution

Smartpath’s proposal, following a competitive tender process which it successfully won, included a combination of services and its flagship Asset Management Software product, Loc8™.   In conjunction with RNSH staff, Smartpath proposed a physical audit methodology that included visiting approximately 70 buildings which contained around 7,000 rooms and provisioned for tagging up to 250,000 assets. Assets ranged from beds to research equipment to specialised medical software.  Smartpath used its Loc8:mobile™ solution running on PDAs to barcode each asset and record vital information, which accelerated information collection and reduced costs. 

Results

The results included the completion of the audit most economically and in the shortest possible timeframe. Smartpath’s web-based asset management solution portal feature provided access to up-to-date information which could be viewed graphically at a high level or to granular detail. The resultant information allowed RNSH’s redevelopment consortia in preparing a detailed and accurate asset management plan.
